Discover Summertime Fun: The Best Youth Summer Activities in Downstate Illinois

Posted on 05/15/2026 by Taylor Perry

Slam those textbooks closed, smash your alarm clock, and let the sunshine take you away. That’s right, school is officially out in Downstate, and nothing but sweet summertime relaxation lies in the months ahead. With pool days, lake days, and endless hours of fun activities ready to be had, Downstate Illinois is the perfect place to romp around during the warmer months. Keep reading and explore this list of some of our favorite ways to spend your summer days in the region this year!

A Day by the Pool

It wouldn’t be summertime without long days lounging by the pool. Catching a tan, swimming laps, and splashing about to escape the harsh heat of Downstate summer are all seasonal staples for locals and visitors alike. These stops are just a few of the best the region has to offer!

Just across town from the stunning campus of Eastern Illinois University sits a summer hideaway that keeps the fun rolling all season long. The Rotary Community Aquatic Center in Charleston makes even the hottest days a blast with its large variety of fun offerings. Water slides, diving boards, and splash pad sprinklers spread across three different pools offer more than enough room to romp about and beat the harsh Downstate heat. As a bonus for those lucky enough to have a summer birthday, their community room is also available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis, making the aquatic center the perfect venue to celebrate!

Another favorite oasis of summer fun can be found in the beautiful civic hub of the Robinson City Park. While the whole park is a wonderful way to spend a day out in the town, the Robinson Municipal Swimming Pool is the star of this show. Originally constructed in 1956 and featuring numerous upgrades since, it is truly one of the best local amenities the region has to offer. A large main swimming area, a twelve-foot-deep diving area, a wading pool, and a 125-foot-long water slide make this sprawling complex a haven of excitement no matter how hot it is outside.

Few communities in Downstate can boast about their amenities quite like the people of Marshall, whose Community Pool is one of the most state-of-the-art facilities in the whole region. This facility, built less than 10 years ago, is a one-stop shop for all sorts of summer fun. A diving board area, lap lanes, a beach-style shallow end, and a large tower slide that looks like it belongs at a water park make the large complex one of the best in the area. Didn’t pack a snack? Don’t fret! The concession stand on-site is open all day, peddling a cheap and delicious lineup of all your summer favorites. Just be sure to wait 30 minutes to jump back in!

Fun in the Sun

Life is too short to spend the summer sitting indoors. Luckily, Downstate Illinois is a treasure trove of outdoor activities for every age group. Charming nature conservation spaces, refreshing bodies of water, and fun-filled youth programs all round out a region that provides a plethora of outdoor experiences for residents and visitors alike. So head on outside and soak up this sun with these great stops.

Founded as the lifelong passion project of Downstate native Helen Burgner Douglas-Hart, the Douglas-Hart Nature Center in Mattoon is a shining example of local dedication to conservation and landscape stewardship.  With over 65 acres of explorable native habitats spread across the complex, it is truly a haven for outdoor lovers of all ages. Trails, information signs, and an inviting visitors center ensure that every trip to Douglas-Hart is pleasant. Youth summer programs invite local children to get outside and ditch the screens for some much-needed fun in the sun. All of this and more make Douglas-Hart a premier destination for summer activities in Downstate.

Another great way to stay active and enjoy the long days of summer is participation in a variety of recreational sports. One of Downstate’s storied institutions, McKendree University in Lebanon, is renowned far and wide as a premier destination for sports of all kinds. Athletics are a core component of the university’s identity, and during the summer, its campus welcomes younger students to join in on the action at the various youth sports camps hosted by the school’s NCAA Division 2 teams. Team camps, day programs, and longer sleepover camps offer developing athletes the chance to show up and show out while learning from some of the best coaches and players in the area. Spots fill up quickly, so make your summer schedule soon!

If you prefer to take in sports as a spectator instead of a player, then a day of baseball and fun with the Gateway Grizzlies in Sauget is a must! On-field professional baseball action is paired with some of the best fan interaction in the sport to create a visitor experience unlike any other. To add to all the fun at the ballpark, mouth-watering food like the “Baseball’s Best Burger” that features glazed donuts as buns really takes the game over the top. The season runs from May to September, meaning there’s plenty of time to catch a game at Arsenal BG Ballpark in 2026.

*As an added bonus, message us the code FUNINTHESUN on Facebook for a chance to score 4 tickets to a Grizzlies game this summer.

Possibly the most unique way to fill time this summer in Downstate is the Carlyle Sailing Association’s Junior Sail Camp on Carlyle Lake in Clinton County. The 6-day seminar welcomes young mariners from ages 10 to 17 to dive into a world of wind-powered sailing on Illinois’ largest man-made reservoir. Campers will stay busy all day, with some information sessions helping develop their skills as sailors, and others leaning into the fun of a summer camp on the water. Sailing games, great food, and camping outdoors for a week are just a few of the many reasons this highly touted summer program consistently draws major attention.

All of these options and more make Downstate Illinois an absolutely beautiful place to spend the warmer months of the year. Once the final bell rings on the school year, be sure to check out these stops to make sure your calendar is full of fun and exciting adventures until classes start back in August!
