Celebrate America's Semiquincintennial in Downstate

Illinois’ America 250 celebration is a onceinageneration opportunity to reflect on 250 years of United States history and the ideals set in motion with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. In partnership with the statewide Illinois America 250 initiative, Discover Downstate Illinois invites visitors to explore how those big national stories play out across the region—through small towns, historic Main Streets, military sites, museums, and landscapes that have shaped the nation’s journey.

From Fourth of July festivals and patriotic parades to museums, historic sites, monuments, and living history experiences, this page brings together standout experiences that showcase the power of place in telling America’s story. Travelers can walk in the footsteps of presidents and pioneers, learn about struggles for freedom and equality, and celebrate local traditions that express “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” in uniquely Downstate ways.
