Discover Dog Days Adventures: Late Summer Activities in Southern Illinois

Posted on 08/11/2026 by Taylor Perry

Summer isn’t over yet! As the dog days of the season roll around, it’s a great reminder that there’s still plenty of time for one last weekend road trip through Downstate before Autumn sets in. While we’re all excited for the changing of the seasons and all the exciting adventures they bring, these late summer road trips are sure to be just as fun! Read on and find the perfect outing for your crew in the waning days of summer 2026.

Southern Illinois Coffee Trail Kick-Off

What better way to squeeze the last little bit of fun out of the summer than getting an early start on the 2026 Southern Illinois Coffee Trail? Now in its fifth year, the trail has proved to be a fan favorite for locals and visitors alike since launching in 2021. Starting August 1st, participants can start stamping their passports at popular shops across Southern Illinois. If you plan to head out and sample some of the best caffeinated drinks the area has to offer, you might as well make a whole weekend out of it!

With 60 shops on the trail, there is no way we could choose just a few for this list. However, we can suggest some of the cutest communities in the region to use as a home base for a weekend of coffee-fueled exploration. Unique overnight stays, one-of-a-kind attractions, and mouthwatering local food joints all complement the Coffee Trail perfectly, making a perfect storm for a weekend of down-home Downstate fun.

The first option takes you East to Clark County and the ever-charming Casey, Illinois (pronounced KAY-ZEE).  Renowned across the country for its collection of 13 of the World’s Largest Things, this quaint American small town is the ideal launch pad for checking off as many stops as possible on the northeastern portion of the trail. While you’re in town, we always suggest staying in one of the beautifully restored rooms at 1890 Sleepover, which blend modern comfort with vintage details to ensure that you are well rested for the adventures ahead.  From there, you can take off on foot to discover the many hidden treasures of downtown Casey or hit the road to start collecting passport stamps!

When it comes to hitting the maximum number of coffee shops you can throughout Downstate, Fairfield in Wayne County is hard to beat. Serving as the gateway to the Southeastern leg of the Coffee Trail, Fairfield’s central location amongst some of the more rural shops makes it an ideal basecamp for going off the beaten path in 2026. For overnight adventures, The Victorian on Main offers a classy alternative to traditional hotels and welcomes guests with pure vintage luxury.

If the weekend’s objective is to stay close to the Mississippi River and hit the countless shops on the Western side of the Coffee Trail, then Prairie du Rocher is the perfect place to set up shop. This tight-knit community, situated just below the bluffs of the mighty Mississippi, is bursting at the seams with history and small-town charm. Right in the heart of town, the Conner House Bed and Breakfast serves as your home away from home as you venture out to the far reaches of Downstate.

Weekends on the Water

It’s no secret that the brutal summer heat likes to stick around well into September in Downstate. Luckily, the region is scattered with some of the most beautiful man-made lakes and natural waterways the state has to offer. Whether you are exploring via boat or enjoying a relaxing day at the beach, a lake day is the best way to stave off the heat during the dog days of summer.

River rats and avid campers alike can cool off and get their fix of outdoor recreation at the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam Site along the Kaskaskia River. Along with the on-site engineering marvel managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the area is home to a wealth of recreational activities. 15 campsites along the river, a boat ramp, and a fishing dock all come together to create a sportsman’s paradise just a short drive from St. Louis. Campsites fill up fast, so snatch them up now to make sure you have a spot!

For a fun weekend with the whole family, Vandalia Lake takes the crown as the best spot to set up camp and enjoy time on the water. This 660-acre man-made reservoir is for more than just water retention. The main recreation area is home to a campground with both electric and primitive sites, a swimming beach, a shower house, and a full-service marina. If you plan to explore past the bounds of camp, 12 miles of shoreline and clean open water mean that the excitement never stops! All of this with easy access to the interstate creates a leisurely weekend to remember.

Maybe a weekend of quiet tranquility is more your speed. If so, Conservation Lake in Mt. Carmel is the perfect oasis for a short retreat in Downstate. The camping facilities have both full hookup and tent-only sites, as well as full shower facilities to ensure the weekend is comfortable and relaxing from start to finish. The small lake on site provides beautiful views without the hustle and bustle of larger waterways, and close proximity to town means that you don’t even have to pack food! This hidden gem is designed for resting and recharging.

Big Events, Bigger Fun

As summer temperatures start to move out, the events calendar in Southern Illinois heats up! Late August and September are some of the busiest times of year for large-scale community events in the area. Larger-than-life sporting events, rockin’ music festivals, and community celebrations complete with carnivals, fried foods, and live performances dot the calendar almost every weekend this time of year. Keep reading to discover just a few of our favorites here in Downstate.

Starting off the list strong is the DuQuoin State Fair, which takes place from August 28th through September 7th. This eleven-day event is jam-packed with exciting activities from start to finish. One of the largest carnivals in the area, food vendors as far as the eye can see, a plethora of motorsports, and of course, live music. Headline acts span multiple genres, with household names like Wiz Khalifa, Tyler Hubbard, Night Ranger, and Randy Houser gracing the stage at the bandstand. If you haven’t bought tickets yet, be sure to snatch them up before they’re gone!

The action keeps rolling just a week later, with one of the most anticipated weekends of the year. September 11th through 13th will see both the annual running of the Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Race at World Wide Technology Raceway as well as the yearly Songs4Soldiers Benefit Concert in Columbia. On Friday, country music legend Joe Nichols takes the stage in Columbia, followed by Don Felder on Saturday. WWTR will be buzzing all weekend, with music acts on multiple stages, three different racing series, and camping across the complex. Headliners Old Dominion will cap off the fun at the track on Sunday following the main race. Tickets are on sale now; get them before they’re gone!

On the eastern side of Downstate, the party keeps rolling at the Casey Popcorn Festival. The three-day celebration of everyone’s favorite movie theater treat takes over Fairview Park with neon-clad carnival rides, food vendors, and main music stage. Headliners go on each evening from September 5-7, with acts Cochren & Co., Greylan James, and Sara Evans singing the night away under the Southern Illinois sky. Each day is full of events from morning to night, so check out their website for a full schedule!
