The Apple of Our Eye: Honoring Johnny Appleseed in Downstate Illinois

Posted on 03/12/2025 by Julia Skrabacz

Did you know Johnny Appleseed was based on a real person? Meet John Chapman: a pioneer nurseryman who didn’t just plant apple trees — he revolutionized the whole orchard game. Forget the traditional tree grafting — Johnny grew apple trees from seeds, and spread nurseries across the U.S. with the dedication of a man on a mission… and a whole lot of apples. His nomadic, quirky lifestyle made him a true American icon, and Disney immortalized him in their 1948 American Legends film.

In the early 1800s, Johnny wasn’t just about apples; he was establishing tree nurseries, selling seeds, teaching farmers, educating communities, and laying the foundation for a national love affair with apples. His birthday may not be until September, but this early spring celebration perfectly aligns with apple-planting season!

To honor Johnny, why not dive into his apple-tastic legacy? Head to a farm-to-market stand for some of the finest apple treats, or plan a future visit to a local orchard for the homegrown pickings later in the season.
