The Accidental Hero is a multimedia one-man show telling the true story of Lt. Col. Matt Konop, a WWII American officer who unexpectedly helped liberate the Czech villages of his grandparents. Written and performed by his grandson, Patrick Dewane, the show draws from typewritten accounts, photographs, and rare film footage discovered after Konop’s death. Dewane brings his grandfather’s remarkable journey to life with humor, heart, and more than a dozen characters. From Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge to the final days of WWII, Konop’s story becomes an extraordinary homecoming as he discovers his lost identity and is embraced by a community he never knew. As he helped liberate the Czech people, he found a liberation of his own.
