In 1890, a man named H. H. Fuller built the house at 956 6th Street, but it was not finished. In 1910, additional sections were built, including the kitchen and dining room areas. Also, in 1910, electricity, inside plumbing, a dumbwaiter, and elephant-hide textured wallpaper were installed.
The Fullers had live–in help, including a butler and a cook. They had added help from housekeepers who came by daily. The house was a symbol of elegance and southern hospitality. It was the gathering place for Charleston’s High society. The Fullers sold their home in 1929, and it changed hands many times over the following forty years.
The Clancy family owned the home for a very short time before selling it to the Sigma Pi Fraternity on June 1, 1954, for $13,000, payable in monthly installments. After seventy-one years, 956 6th Street has a new life that pays homage to the original owner’s desired “southern hospitality and charm.” An Eastern Illinois University alumnus of the Hospitality & Tourism Management program, Joshua Craig, created the Charleston House, which fulfills the Fuller Family's wishes. The Charleston House is full of life, history, preservation, imagination, dreams, calmness, and hospitality. It is truly a gem on historic 6th Street in Charleston.
