Illinois's First Freedom Rock Coming to Shiloh

shiloh illinois first location of freedom rock
Illinois's first Freedom Rock is coming soon to Shiloh Station Road and Lebanon Avenue.

In November, Shiloh will host artist, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, as he paints his first Freedom Rock in the State of Illinois. Sorensen created the original rock just south of Interstate 80 in Adair County, Iowa, and repaints it annually as a thank you to all who have served in the armed forces. He has since painted a rock for all 99 Iowa Counties and some in other states. Shiloh’s will be his first in the State of Illinois.

Shiloh residents, Dana & Angelia Steffey, brought the idea to a Shiloh Village Board Meeting. They agreed to pay over half the cost for the rock. Shiloh’s Mayor & Board enthusiastically agreed. A site was selected at Shiloh Station Road and Lebanon Avenue as the future home of Shiloh’s Freedom Rock. A heated tent will soon encase the rock in anticipation of the arrival of Sorensen in mid-November.

We can’t wait to see Shiloh’s Freedom Rock!

The "Freedom Rock Park" will also be home to a historical sign donated by the St. Clair County Historical Society highlighting the many contributions to the area from German immigrants.
