From the 1800's to now, the Grand Levee has been a celebration held in Vandalia and continues its longevity this weekend with fun to be had by all! What first started as a way to honor government dignitaries coming to the area, the Grand Levee is now a way to bring the community together and celebrate its rich culture.
Starting Friday, June 17th, the celebration kicks off from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site with an old-fashioned ham and bean dinner, funnel cakes, and bluegrass
band, the Salt Creek String Band. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. visitors can watch period craft demonstrations and children can participate in period games and check out the petting zoo. Also on Saturday, the Vandalia Historical Society will have free trolley rides to tour historic Vandalia.
Those hoping to catch a glimpse of the 16th President of the United States, look no further as Abe Lincoln will be present! ... Well, a Lincoln impersonator will be present at the House of Representatives chamber at 1 p.m. on Saturday! Don't forget to see blacksmith Bryan Headley's demonstrations. The Fayette County Art Connection will also be present with painting demonstrations as well.
Displays by the 17th Missouri Company G. and the Volunteer Infantry will be showcased. Included in the various displays is an old-time medical show by Professor Farquar and Polecat Annie.
This event is free and open to the public both days.
