Fresh Air & Fresh Food

Posted on 05/17/2023 by Tyler Pletsch

There are many simple pleasures in life, like dining al fresco. Who doesn’t love a delicious meal while enjoying the wonderful weather? That’s why we put a list together of some fan favorite outdoor dining spots in Downstate Illinois.

Western

Starting in the Western Region of our territory, Café on the Abbey in Columbia is a great spot for brunch with friends and family. Their menus are ever changing with fresh concepts and ingredients, but one constant is the unbelievable flavors! Don’t forget to order an iced latte off their seasonal menu.

In the quaint downtown area of O’Fallon, you’ll find 1st Street Lounge. This family-owned bar and restaurant will you have you coming back time and time again for their delicious burgers, wraps, and more! We especially love their sweet potato waffle fries!

If you’re looking for something to derail your tastebuds, head to Highland and give Railshake a try! Specializing in everything from jambalaya pasta to burgers, there’s something for everyone in your party.

Central

Our Central Region has some great hidden gems including the Fainting Goat in Pocahontas. Here you can enjoy perfectly prepared surf or turf options for lunch or dinner. Located just off I-70, this eatery makes for a great pit-stop!

If you need a spot that offers both dinner and dessert, then Wally’s Drive-In in Breese is the stop for you. Choose your size of burger or chicken sandwich and cap it off with a refreshing root beer float or shake! This budget friendly spot takes you just 5 minutes off Highway 50.

Those wanting some time away and sipping wine lakeside should head to Hidden Lake Winery in Aviston. Though the drive will take you miles off the beaten path, the food, wine and good times are worth the trip! Choose from flatbreads, warm sandwiches, or a charcuterie board.

Eastern

The Eastern Region of our 21-county coverage area has some unbeatable eateries including the Moonshine Store in Martinsville. While the grill turns off at 12:30 p.m., nothing beats a homemade burger early in the morning or at lunchtime. Voted top 25 burgers in Illinois, this is one stop you will remember and talk about.

After seeing some of the world’s largest things in Casey, stop for a bite to eat at the Whitling Whimsy Café. Pick up a Thanksgiving Turkey sandwich or a tasty BLT and enjoy it while listening to the sounds of the world’s largest wind chime.

Near Oblong, you’ll find Irene’s Vineyard tucked away near the Embarrass River. Not much beats a beautiful wedding venue, delicious pizza, and a wine glass in hand!
